My question is: The punishment for sin is eternal separation from God. Jesus paid everyone's punishment on the cross. How did Jesus paid everyone's punishment in 3 hours?

Mike Fabarez gave an example. If someone slap another person in the face, the severity of the punishment would increase with who the other person is. For example, the consequence of slapping a president of a nation versus slapping a commoner would definitely be more severe. Inversely, Jesus Christ, who is God of the universe, is a very important person and He was punished. As a result, His punishment was able to be dispensed as a payment, for all the normal people in the world.
